"Thrifting"

5.14.2011

One thing I would love to do is go thrifting. The pieces I often love on my friends, strangers, or other bloggers, are always ones they thrifted. The reason I don't thrift? I am super squeamish and kind of freaked out by it. Slowly but surely, I hope to one day get over my fear.

So in the mean time, I will take baby steps, and practice "thrifting" at home.

My dad decided to clean out the walk in closet that him and my mom share last week, and I waited anxiously to see what gems would be unearthed from the depths of their closet.

And I must say, I did quite well.
I have been obsessing over pussybow blouses for a while now and was just giddy when I came across this top. The color is so bold, and the fabric is light enough that I can wear it now and not be too hot.
Another piece I have been wanting to add to my closet for summer. It has a slip lining which makes it impossible for me to fit into (so constricting), so I'm going  to rip it out (cue Tim Gunn saying "Make it work!") and wear a slip underneath.

I also "thrifted" a faux fur floor length coat and a camel colored boyfriend style blazer.

What treasures have you found from other peoples "trash"? And if any of you have been hesitant to thrift at first, but have gotten over it, PLEASE share your tips with me :)

  1.  I like jackets and items like that thrifted, since they don't seem like they would be so... worn. Or anything machine washable I guess :) Way to "make it work" with the skirt!

  3. I like thrifting, but I totally know what you are talking about. Sometimes I still get freaked out to, but then again stores like Godwill or Savers wash all their stuff and inspect it prior to selling, which makes me definitely calm a little bit. The only thing I do not like to thrift are shoes I'd wear without socks. Clothes can be washed (or put in a freezer), but shoes - especially ones that are worn without socks -, well you can't really "clean" them. I love thrifting but my mom raised me with that "Thrifting is yucky!" attitude... she still gets grossed out when I tell her I bought something from a thrift store. Haha.

Please don't get me wrong, my mom isn't a rich snob !!  I  think she has this attitude towards  because of the way she was raised... she's from a very small, Russian town and lived on a farm with her grandmother during her teens in the 1950/1960. She used to tell me that when she was a young girl she would have clothes passed down to her from relatives because there was no money to buy new stuff, and I understand that if you were raised like that you probably wouldn't want to re-live that whole thing about wearing something people already had before you... Oh, well.

  8. I didn't know Goodwill/Savers took such precautions and actually inspected the items! Thats a bit reassuring. I always thought they just accepted items, did a quick "whiff" test, and then put it out for sale. And I totally understand what your mom is saying. My mom grew up in a similar situation and feels the same way.

  10. I always say that the worst thing about thrifting is that you have to do laundry when you get home!  I just wash everything as soon as I get home or I get it dry cleaned if necessary. Shoes, purses and belts I spray with lemon essential oil I have mixed with distilled water.  I figure that kills the germs and freshens things up.  Debbie

  13. Great tips! Definitely noted. Especially since I am not fond of the "old" smell at all.

  14. Definitely get it! The fabric is nice and light, and its so versatile in terms of dressing it up or down. I think its an essential!
