Keeping Track of My Closet.

2.06.2013

With NYFW just around the corner tomorrow, I found myself looking through my closet and making the same statement I make every time I get ready:
I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR!

So maybe this statement is a bit of a half-truth. My closet is a bit on the scarce side (losing weight will do that to you,) but I shop enough on a daily weekly basis that I do have a few outfits I can put together. The problem that tends to arise is twofold: because I wear the same thing over and over again ,items that I don't wear right away tend to go forgotten and unworn in my closet. I'm sure I have much more imagination in me than to wear the same things in different combinations, but what can I say, I can be a creature of habit.

So what to do? I had to rule out the option of having Cher Horowitz's closet, even though to this day, I still consider it to be one of my dream closets. Instead, as ironic as the timing may be, I drew inspiration from my time backstage at various fashion shows and the model boards used to keep track of each look. As a highly visual person, the idea couldn't be more fitting! I set out and took pictures of all the items in my closet I haven't worn (most with tags still attached...) and placed them in a central part of my closet.

The goal is to look to Audrey, see what I have first, and if it is fitting for the occasion. As I wear the item, I'll toss the photo. I am hoping this will help me to keep track of what I have and actually wear what I buy. Only time (and outfit posts) will tell if it works or not.

What helps you to keep track of what's in your closet?

BTW! Granted the snowstorm doesn't completely ruin everything, you can follow me on Twitter and Instagram for all things NYFW!

  2. That's a pretty good idea! When I wear something, I usually hang it back up (after it's washed, of course) on the left of my closet, so then I pull from the right side. This way, I don't re-wear things too often in a short time period. I know that's totally different than what you're saying, but it made me think of it!

When I do a closet cleaning, I try to think of the last time I actually wore the item. If it's been over a year, I toss it!

  3. A while ago, my friends and I went through all my draws and put little post its on my clothes with a date on them. If I picked up that article of clothes and found that I had not worn it in 5-6 months, I would donate it. It only happened with a few piece, but it helped me cut the "dead weight" from my closet.

  4. I feel like I've already got chers' closet, what with 4 years of outfit photos, I've got records of what is in there, the last time I wore it, and what I wore it with.

this does not solve the 'i have nothing to wear' problem. I'm quite certain there is no cure, because I could have two or three outfits planned out (in my head, or written on my computer's sticky notes) and just not feel like wearing them. Your outfit has to match your mood.

    1. You definitely do have the best closet documentation!
And I agree, there just may be no cure for the nothing to wear dilemma. I love that you write out outfit ideas too!

  5. Great idea! I usually just wear something and put it back in my closet until I want to wear it again and sometimes I even forget I had a clothing item!
